Signs of the Times #2

The future of our children (bio accumulation of toxins from incineration) as well as our community is at risk, courtesy of Chair Anderson, Mayor Abernethy, and the majority of Durham Regional Council.

Fallout (emissions) from the proposed incinerator will affect not only Clarington and Oshawa, but also the rest of the Region and beyond. Why do you think they build the stack to high? It is to disperse the emissions farther from the subject site itself. Those ultra fine particles are carried by the wind. This means they are diluting the pollution by spreading it farther and wider. Since it bio accumulates in our bodies (and in the bodies of livestock that we consume, among other things) - that means we don't get rid of it. It continues to build in our bodies until in some people it will cause disease such as cancers, lung disease and more.

Residents have been pleading with the Region to go back to looking at Alternatives - but they refuse to do so. The decision to go to incineration was made years ago, before the EA even began. Therefore the search for alternatives was pretty much given lip service and nothing else. Very sad for the people of Durham Region and especially for Oshawa and Clarington.

R.I.P Clarington. You are becoming known as the garbage dump of Durham Region. Darlington Nuclear, Sewage Treatment Plant, Incinerator, St. Marys Cement "experiment" with burning plastics in their kilns. What will they dump on us next? How much more can this airshed tolerate? Does anybody care?

  1. How appropriate. It appears our elected officials don't understand or don't care about the health risks they are forcing on the rest of us. They would rather listen to and believe the incinerator industry, who stand to make money off this, and the consultants who already do make a fortune from promoting incineration, than to the doctors and the scientists who have nothing to gain by raising the alarm. Nothing but good conscience and gaining the health of their neighbours and friends.

Is this project really worth the risk to residents?

    NO.

  2. The previous blog brings up the question of money. Have people stopped to think of not only the initial cost of this monster (not including the $10M paid to consultants) but also how your property taxes will go up while your property value will go down. Some deal this is. Then there is the unthinkable health costs and loss of tourism dollars.

As someone once said, "we have the best politicians that money can buy"

  3. The money is important, but our health is more so. They keep saying "We won't build it if it isn't safe". Well, what do they want for proof?

Why is it obvious to everyone but the politicians that they can't GUARANTEE our health and safety. They are depending on the slanted reports of the incineration industry. They refuse to consider the reports and medical journals that they've been presented with, from people who have no pecuniary interest in incineration. They only care about our health.

Whatever happened to the precautionary principle? Does anyone believe the Province will stop this incinerator, since they have already shown their preference for incineration? Can they answer the question "IS IT SAFE?" No, they can't.

  4. Durham Region has a well-known reputation as being one of the most environmentally UNFRIENDLY and UNINFORMED regions in the Province. Comments from the Province, from Toronto and from newspapers in other parts of the province have not been kind in their portrayal of Durham Regional Council. And with good reason.

This incinerator business will certainly solidify that well deserved reputation.

    What an embarrassment!

  5. Haha. I love the signs, even though it is really no laughing matter. Its more a crying matter. I suppose we get the politicians we deserve, because somebody voted them in. They are either not very bright or simply attempting to find any justification at all for imposing this incinerator on us. It doesn't need to be real or be factual. They apparently will use any excuse to push it through.

It is time we stood up to them. We must find better candidates for the next election and we must support them strongly. We have some time before fall of 2010. We had better make good use of it. These stooges don't deserve to be re-elected and feed off our tax money. It is time to hold them to account.

  6. I live in Courtice. Councillor Foster will have my vote whether he runs for Mayor or Regional or Local seat. Councillor Novak will not have my vote no matter what, unless she opens her eyes and votes appropriately instead of pushing this thing forward always saying she's trying to get answers. If it's not obvious to her now, then she surely can't handle more complicated questions.

My neighbours feel the same, in discussions we've been having in our neighbourhood get-togethers.

  7. I think the death of Clarington should be recognized as Dec 1 2006 when the current Mayor and Council took office. It almost looks like Roger hand picked the cast of whimps we got to bully the incinerator into our community.
