Mutton acquitted due to "reasonable doubt"

Feb 26, 2007 - Ex-mayor Mutton acquitted of assault charges - Metroland

The Crown failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that what occurred during a "rage fueled by excessive alcohol consumption" amounted to assault against Mr. Mutton's wife Jennifer and 10-year-old daughter Katie, said Justice J.J. Keaney in delivering his verdict.

  1. I hope he's learned his lesson. Violence against women and children, whether physical or verbal abuse, is not excused by alcohol.

  2. Lets hope he doesn't try for a comeback in politics. His admitted alcohol abuse is reason enough to not put him in control of our tax dollars.

  3. "Total impact" of election loss? I don't think so. I had decided not to vote for Mutton even before June. There were many other reasons why he lost, one of them being his unwillingness to listen (really listen) to taxpayers and his rudeness to and arrogance with residents. And all the money he spent (our money) on recreation facilities when there were other things that were needed more. Sure, we needed some recreational facilities or upgrading, but he certainly went overboard. Now we're all paying for it. There were plenty of other reasons too. The alleged assault and drunkenness were only a bit of icing on the cake. That cake was already baked.

  4. ditto, what Helen wrote. I had made my decision prior to June; prior to the incident or charges. There was much more to blame than the trial for his loss.

  5. And should we forget that right after his loss in November, he commented in the paper that he doesn't drink as it contradicts his hobby of bodybuilding. Now he fully admits to drinking and uses it as an excuse to justify his horrendous actions. Mr. Mutton has an issue with the truth. He feels he can say whatever he thinks regardless of basis in fact. Unfortunately for far too long the local press (with the exception of the Orono Weekly Times) let him away with it. His time has come and passed (let's hope!).
