Sticking around? Or time to go?

Is this the end for the Clarington Watchdog blog, since the election is now over? Is there any further need for it or will there be such an interest since we don't vote again for another 4 years?

We think that even though we have several new faces on Clarington Council, including a new Mayor, and a few new faces will be showing up at Regional Council as well, there is still a need to keep their feet to the fire. There are campaign promises to be fulfilled and there will always be new issues arising that will affect our municipality, which in turn affects our quality of life (and rate of taxation!).

We will do our best to report on issues, give opinions and try to help to keep Clarington residents informed. We plan on opening up for comments again shortly, but please be careful not to libel anyone. We had numerous threats awhile ago and had to close down the comments or close down the blog. Now that the election is over, hopefully that will no longer be a problem.

So for the next couple of weeks we'll be commenting on the election results, voter turnout, upcoming issues, the appointment of the Durham Region Chair, and anything else that happens to come to mind. We've had a lot of support from voters over the last several months and hope to keep informing you and also making you think a little about what is happening around us. And hopefully to encourage you to become involved in our wonderful community.

  1. Yaaaaaahhhhh!!!

Herman promises to try and keep a lid on it. Ummmph!!! *with fingers crossed behind my back*

So nice to be back out in the fresh air. Speak our minds, share opinions and stories, news tidbits and maybe even a little gossip.

    Freedom!!!
Nothing like it in the world.

    Welcome back Clarington WatchDog!

  2. Thank you for staying and for encouraging people to "get involved". Some of us can't get to town hall meetings so it helps have another voice, in addition to the newspapers.

I learned what questions to ask candidates when they visited my subdivision. It did help me to make decisions.

  3. Blogs like this are definitely needed. People do have a right to comment on what is happening in their community. The current set up (not just in Clarington) precludes the average person from speaking except at election time. I would suggest that your service is even more important in between the elections.

  4. Even at election time there are some politicians who try to keep people from speaking their opinions - those who need to control everything. They bully, intimidate, threaten and brow-beat anyone who dares to disagree with them. We need a complete overhaul of the system and to find a way to stop politicians from silencing people.

  5. As a candidate for Local Councillor Ward 3 I found this blog to be a good source of public reaction and opinion. Now that I am elected, I expect my feet to be held to the fire as should the rest of Council. I will keep dropping back in to see what the hot issues are to this site.

  6. Thank you Willie. It is nice to have support from a new Council member and to know that at least one candidate found the blog useful (or at least interesting!).

Please feel free to comment or ask questions at any time.

Also, when you "choose an identity" (when you make a comment), if you choose "Other" you can put your name in the box (and don't need to enter a website). Or you can just add your name as you did at the end of your post.

And even though you were one of our favourite candidates and we'll be glad to see you in the Council seat, we WILL hold your feet to the fire too, so get those asbestos socks ready!

  7. Great job from the "dog".Keep an eye on the Regional Councilor from ward 1&2. Previously on this job there were numerous conflict of interests that prevented voting on serious issues for these wards and, this person has been known to be developer friendly.
