12 Sept 2006

And then there were SIX

So, as of September 12 we now have six candidates for Mayor, so I'll have to change our poll.

Former Mayor Diane Hamre has now officially declared, so it's heating up even more. Will any drop out prior to the last day of withdrawal from Nomination (October 2nd) in the Mayoral race or any of the other races? Will anyone else be nominated to run in Ward 1 before September 29 (last day for nominating) - the only council seat race with only one candidate?

We'll just have to wait and see. Let's just hope that the increased interest by candidates will also translate into increased voter interest, and ultimately voter turnout.

We need to have debates, now more than ever. Who will step forward to host debates for these positions? We hope to see some scheduled sooner rather than later. There certainly is more interest than usual for this election so lets help people to get the information they need to make informed decisions.

Candidates are always welcome to give their comments on this blog. If voters have specific questions they're welcome to ask them here too. Or voice beefs, suggestions, support. The more the better.

Old poll results:
Who is your preference for Mayor at the present time?
John Mutton 10.5%
Jim Abernethy 57.0%
Jim Schell 22.8%
Richard Ward 6.1%
Wayne Chaskavich 3.5%

Go ahead and change your vote if you wish, or keep the same vote (Poll to the right)

  1. I too saw the copy of a televised council meeting on CD, at the Orono Fair....and I was shocked and stunned! Unbelievable antics from our own council!!! They were a sneering, disrespectful bunch. Their attitude only made me think they possessed 'insider information' which they know they have to hide. Very scary!

Now, I just read the article in Metroland's monopoly headed," Mayoral candidate asks for admission to town hall, but on his terms"
And it is about this same Richard Ward. Is this true? A bylaw was enacted to keep someone who was trying to expose fraud, OUT of the townhall?
So...what does this lead us to believe? In my mind, 2 plus 2 equals 4.
    Somebody had something to hide.

There seems to be much merit to this whole stinking mess. And many more people know what the real truth is, obviously....except we, the taxpayer. Somebody benefitted! I want to know more about the loss of 6 million dollars of water. I want to know why it wasn't brought out into the open. Unless of course there really was something to hide, eh? Like...why didn't Metroland publish any of this, in the past? I think this water scandal should have been big news, or am I wrong? In any other jurisdiction, the press would have been all over this like white on rice. But here, we don't have an independent publisher to provide us with their slant on things.
I seems to me, it is Metroland's way or no way. That is very scary, too.

And, I want to know 'why' Richard Ward was barred from townhall. A bylaw to bar you from entering the townhall? Does this mean, if I come forward to blow the whistle on some nefarious activity, in the area, that I too, am going to be barred, because I might expose somebody?
What country are we living in?

    Something stinks here.
I think we should be scared, very, very scared.

  2. "But here, we don't have an independent publisher to provide us with their slant on things."

Yes we do - try the Orono Times! Some of the best independent coverage of this election so far. I live in Bowmanville but wouldn't dream of not subscribing to that little paper. It is certainly not afraid of angering the powers that be and printing things they'd rather were not made public. Try it - you'll like it.

  3. A quick warning about blogs...you don't know who's posting, therefore you don't know the accuracy of information.

There is always more to any story than what is seen on the surface. Mr. Ward may not have been banned from council for merely being a critic!

Just be careful what you read and what you believe......

  4. Sure. But it would be helpful if someone from the municipality would release the "facts" of the case. According to a Sept. 12 newspaper article, Mayor Mutton has now offered to repeal the by-law that keeps him from being able to enter Town Hall without permission. But although Mr. Ward wants the by-law repealed, he is also asking for Council to release all public information with regard to the by-law. He's even willing to hire a lawyer to get it done. Mutton doesn't seem to want to release all the information so that makes it look like there is something to hide.

It is no secret that there is much animosity between Mr. Ward and Mr. Mutton and there are plenty of questions about the legitimacy of the by-law to begin with.

Another bullying tactic by our Mayor? Lets get the facts and then we can decide.

  5. Thank you Anthony B...I will try the Orono Times. I am becoming weary of reading only one view.

To anonymous who said, "....you don't know who's posting, therefore you don't know the accuracy of information." You are so right. But if we don't pursue the info, how will we ever know what the truth is?

To Tony B. you said, "Another bullying tactic by our Mayor?" Are you accusing the Mayor of being a bully? Shame on you for your opinion. (please bear with me)

I have been warned by Paul Futhey at durhamregion.com election blog (A Metroland monopoly publication) for my opinion and comments. (Same as above)

He warned me! What the heck is this? Better be careful Tony B., you might be warned too.

I now have to agree with another anonymous above, who said, "I seems to me, it is Metroland's way or no way. That is very scary, too."

Someone knows more in this town, then they are admitting.

I am originally from the Toronto area. I can't believe that ordinary Torontonians would be "warned" for their feelings, opinions or comments on local election blogs.
Unless of course it was a Metroland publication, maybe. I understand their right to edit and or omit, in order to keep their principles protected and sway their readership.
But to be "warned"? How ludicrous.

Then again, maybe I should be worried, as they may send the gendarme to my home, next.

    I'll keep ya posted.

To repeat 'anonymous' sentiments...This is truly getting scarier and scarier.
